Import and edit Canon C500 2K/4K MXF footages with FCP X/7/6 on Mac

Besides the ability of capturing 2K footage at a 2048 × 1080 (or 1920 × 1080) resolution, the Canon C500 also includes two options for recording 4K. There's the DCI production standard that records at a 4096 × 2160 resolution with a 1.896:1 aspect ratio, or there's the TV-centric Quad Full HD production standard that records at a 3840 × 2160 resolution and a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. With every camcorder, comes many new questions about workflow. The term "workflow" can be fairly broad, but today I am looking at importing Canon C500 4K MXF footage into Final Cut Pro X, FCP 7 to make smooth editing.

Although Canon offers XF Utility software to manage and play back your clips and XF Plugin to help you natively import Canon C500 2K/4K MXF footage to FCP X, there are many cons for this, doesn't work well wtih 50Mbps (CBR) 4:2:2, 1920×1080, (60i/30p/24p); with a lot of steps; may cause errors due to incompatible codecs; spends a lot time; occupies a large amount of RAM, etc. Overall, I have to tell you the importing way is a tedious process, which needs your patience.

Fortunately, there is an alternative easy way to fix the issue. Since FCP X is designed to work best in ProRes, the easy wokraround is to use 3rd-party software to convert Canon C500 2K/4K MXF to ProRes codec for Final Cut Pro X.

To get the work done, the best program I can recommend is UFUWare Video Converter for Mac, which can convert C500 MXF files to ProRes 422 ensuring maximum editing quality and efficiency when working with Final Cut Pro X. I like the batch processing and joining of multiple mxf videos into one file. The editing feature to trim the recorded videos is great, as I can control the content for conversion. If you're editing Canon XF Camera or Panasonic P2 or Sony XDCAM MXF clips with Final Cut Pro X, chances are you already installed this great free utility.
